The Department of Radiology works in conjunction with the School of Medicine to provide electives for third and fourth year medical students. Students will have the opportunity to rotate through a number of different subspecialties including abdominal imaging, pediatric radiology, neuroradiology, ultrasound, interventional radiology, musculoskeletal radiology, and breast imaging.
The following is a list of the medical student rotations:
M3 students
- RADIO 631. Introduction to Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology. This course is for all students, including those targeting radiology as a career as well as those who plan to enter other medical specialties. The two-week course is designed to introduce students to all major imaging modalities and equip students with practical knowledge regarding anatomy, advantages and disadvantages of each imaging modality, safety issues related to medical imaging, and a basic approach to image interpretation. Maximum of Four (4) students each rotation. Available all rotations except December.
M4 students
- RADIO 651A. Senior Radiology (E). This elective is for fourth-year medical students with an interest in radiology, especially those interested in pursuing a career in the field or those seeking to sharpen their skills in basic radiograph interpretation. The student spends four weeks rotating through the various subspecialties of radiology: Abdominal, Breast (Mammography), Cardiothoracic, Neuroradiology, Nuclear Medicine, Pediatric, Ultrasonography and Vascular and Interventional Radiology. Students also have the option to take abbreviated call during the month (last no later than 10 p.m.). Grades for this elective bare based on: attendance, rotation evaluations (completed by staff and residents), case presentation and completion of the radiology checklist. The case presentation should be based on an interesting case the student encountered during the month. Maximum of two (2) students per month. Available all months except May and December.
- RADIO 651B. Senior Radiology (E). This elective is for fourth-year medical students with an interest in radiology, especially those interested in pursuing a career in the field or those seeking to sharpen their skills in basic radiograph interpretation. - Radio 656A. Special Radiology Elective (E). A self-designated rotation in radiology clinical areas in which the fourth-year medical students rotate through one or two subspecialty areas of interest. The student will present an interesting case observed during his/her rotation at a departmental conference. Additional requirements may vary based on chosen subspecialty area. Completion of RADIO 651A/B is a prerequisite. Maximum of two (2) students per month Available all months except May and December.
- Radio 656B. Special Radiology Elective (E). A two week self-designated rotation in radiology clinical areas in which the fourth-year medical students rotate through one or two subspecialty areas of interest. The student will create three (3) case presentations on interesting cases observed during his/her rotation. Additional requirements may vary based on chosen subspecialty area. Completion of RADIO 651A/B is a prerequisite. Maximum of four (4) students per month Available all months except May and December.
- RADIO 657A. Interventional Radiology (P). This procedure based rotation is for fourth-year medical students with an interest in pursuing a career in interventional radiology. The student spends four weeks immersed in the world of interventional radiology. Students also may take call during the month. Grades for this elective bare based on: attendance, rotation evaluations (completed by staff and residents), and case presentation. The case presentation should be based on an interesting case the student encountered during the month. Maximum of two (2) students per month. Available all months except May and December.
- Radio 658A. Medical 3D Printing This rotation is for fourth-year medical students with an interest in gaining experience in medical 3D printing. In this rotation, students will have the opportunity to learn how to operate common 3D printers, use an associated slicing and mixing software and convert medical CT images into 3D printed models. Grades for this elective bare based on: attendance and the completion of assigned tasks. Maximum of one (1) student per month. Only available during June-November.
Extramural students
- MED 851. Radiology Extramural. Extramural rotations can be arranged with the course director or chair's approval for students who are interested in the specialty.
- MED 852. Radiology Extramural. Extramural rotations can be arranged with the course director or chair's approval for students who are interested in the specialty.
